It’s Monday night, my husband just got home from work, and the kids are going a little crazy. Although a big plate of comfort food does sound tempting, I am not eating dinner tonight. Neither is my husband. For the past few years we’ve been following an intermittent fasting diet, and on select days throughout the week we simply choose not to eat.

Although it sounds crazy to most, it feels very, very normal to me.

Intermittent fasting – the practice of fasting during predetermined time periods for health and weight loss benefits – has been a part of our life for quite some time. We are not very crazy or extreme people. We lead relatively normal lives, and many people do not know about our dieting technique at all.

Tonight I do not have to deal with the stresses of cooking dinner (my kids have already eaten), obsess over the calories in my food choices, or deal with any of the emotions that come if I overeat. I simply just keep myself busy and do not eat.

If it feels challenging, I dream about all of the wonderful food I will be eating tomorrow, and I begin to feel excited instead.

For me, the wait is worth it because I am still able to eat foods that I love. (Donuts are still a very, very regular part of my life.)
